Home Sweet Home

I searched for " Homeland Quotes" in order to find some sweet and touching quotes about home since I decided to dedicate my first post to my hometown. I was not hoping for this one to pop out.

True but still :D

Anyways, I wanted to tell you more about my roots. In today's post you will find out more about a place that means a world to me. My hometown, Šibenik. I'll begin with a little bit of history.

Šibenik is a historic town in Croatia, located in central Dalmatia with a population of 40,000. It is a political, educational, transport, industrial and tourist center of Šibenik-Knin county. Unlike other cities along the Adriatic coast, which were established by Greeks, Illyrians and Romans, Šibenik was founded by Croats. It was mentioned for a first time under its present name in 1066 in a Charter of the Croatian King Petar Krešimir IV, and for a period of time it was a seat of this Croatian King. For that reason, Šibenik is also called "Krešimirov grad" which means "Krešimir's city" . It is the oldest native Croatian town on the eastern shores of the Adriatic. Šibenik has had a very rough history. From intense battles with Venice to fighting off Turkish invaders, Šibenik had to stand its ground the hard way. This is why Croats of that time had to construct a powerful defensive grid of forts and walls, in order to keep the enemy as far as possible. One by one, they builded four fortresses in total.

St. Michael (Sv. Mihovil )

St. John ( Sv. Ivan )

St. Nicholas ( located at sea )

aaand my personal favourite

St. Baron Degenfeld ( Šubićevac )

My most favourite place in the world is actually located on St. Baron Degenfeld. Every time I go there, old memories suddenly become alive. When I was younger I used to go there all the time with my friends playing hide and seek and when I became older, it was a perfect spot for thinking about stuff and just relaxing. A lot of people are actually spending their birthdays there. But what I love most about it, is that you get to see the whole panorama of the city. Although I've seen it a billion times, I still can't get enough.

Apart from fortresses, Šibenik is most known for it's Cathedral of St. James ( Sv. Jakov ), which is the simbol of the city. It is the most architectural monument in the entire country. Since 2000, the Cathedral has been on UNESCO World Heritage List. It is unique by many things, especially because it is entirely built of stone slabs and ribs, with no binding material.

Although it is a beautiful city, it is known that Šibenik lives mostly during the Summer thanks to the people who come visit us. Over 10 million tourists visit Croatia every year in order to spend their vacation on the beach. That's why a lot of them stop by to say hello to Šibenik. Since my whole family is involved in tourism, I can't escape from it. And that's why I spent most of my summer time cleaning, translating, but also meeting new people as well.

One of the most popular destinations appears to be "Solaris Beach Resort". If you ever decide to stop by, this is where you can find me :)

I hope this was interesting for you guys.

Thank you so much for your time!
